Science - Intention
At Rucstall Primary School we provide an ambitious Science curriculum which is progressive across all year groups. We begin teaching key ideas and elements in EYFS and these are developed throughout the children’s time at Rucstall. Everyone at the school works hard to ensure children experience an engaging curriculum whilst also linking their learning to prior knowledge. Science allows children to celebrate the achievements of scientists throughout history and the world. In addition, children are given the opportunity to use investigations to build and enhance knowledge as well as scientific skills ready for life’s challenges.
Science - Implementation
Science is taught weekly with a key idea/question investigated within each unit. Scientific knowledge and skills are taught in conjunction with each other. Where possible, children are given the opportunity to link their learning to mathematics through the use of measurement and statistics. Most units are taught more than once throughout the primary phase to enable core knowledge to be revisited and built upon. Where there is only one unit, knowledge is periodically revisited and assessed to ensure this has not been forgotten.
