Hazel Class at Christmas Time

Welcome to Hazel Class

Hello and a warm welcome to Hazel Class. We hope that you have all had a fun and restful summer and we are looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Please look at our class page regularly for updates, photos and to find out what we are learning!

Please look at your child's reading record to get started on their home learning and begin their Year 2 reading journey: remember, they should be reading wherever possible.

I wonder who will be the first to get their 25 reads?

We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

Mrs Earl and Mrs Bailey

Today we made a start to our gymnastics unit. We have been building on our knowledge of gymnastic positions from Year 1.

Wednesday 11th September. Today we were lucky enough to have a scooter workshop. Adam taught us basic safety skills and has enabled us to safely use our new school scooters.

Friday 27th September - We have been looking at how we can extend our knowledge of our shapes and use them on the apparatus

Take a look at our final pieces from our recent Art Day for the 50th Birthday Celebrations. We loved creating our ponds by mixing primary colours together.

We have been having a go at painting flames by mixing primary colours, in preparation for our final pieces.

This week in computing we have learnt how to record on the iPad and how to program our class mates, just like on Scratch Jnr

Today in Writing we have been using the app Chatterpix to get our character Vlad, from our new book, to come alive when we asked him questions.

Wednesday 23rd October, the children have filled their reward jar; this means they will be awarded with a class treat tomorrow afternoon. Well done Hazel on your hard work this half term.

Before half term, we were lucky to have a visit from the Fire Service. The children learned how to stay safe in an emergency situation, how to make a 999 call and tips to remember their address. Mrs Bailey even got the opportunity to race a child in getting dressed into the correct uniform (they only had 3 minutes).

The children created their own pieces of Art based on the work of Jan Griffier. I think you'll agree that they have done an absolutely fantastic job!

Hazel Class had lots of fun engaging with our Autumn 2 'Wellbeing Wednesday'. As a class we explored the key focus question 'How can nature support our wellbeing?'. We then took part in a carousel of activities both in the classroom and outdoors. We finished with some whole class bubble breathing.

This week the children have begun thinking about their diary entry in Writing. Before we ask the children to write their own, based on The Great Fire of London, we thought we would let the children experience, a safe, fire! The children absolutely loved the experience and were particularly excited by Mrs Sayer putting out the fire, which created a lot of smoke around Mrs Earl!

This week in Science we have been investigating our senses and how these are key to survival. Take a look at some of our children exploring the sense of 'smell' and trying to guess (without looking) what was in my bowl.

This week the children did a fantastic job in their Nativity performance. We thank you for your support in organising these fantastic costumes and learning some tricky lines!

As part of our PSHE curriculum, Year 2 focus on Mental Health. Today we focussed on 'time in'. The art of meditation and 'body scan' to support with homing in on our mental health and our bodies. The children were impeccably behaved and were very eager to share with you the clip used. Please find below some pictures of them meditating and the link for the clip used.

This week in Science we tested our predictions! We have been learning about forces and how it can affect the motion of an object, as well as whether material on a slope can also have an affect. We wish there were more pictures to show you, however the marble moved too fast; we even had to go into 4 decimal places to measure with our stopwatch! (The flash of blue you can see, is the marble!)

Our Science investigations continue...! Last week we looked at the affect the height of a slope has on the distance a ball will travel. The children were very excited to be able to independently measure and directly see the impact the steepness of the slope had on the distance of the ball. They did some fantastic measuring and found that the steepness makes the ball roll further and quicker.

This week in PSHE, we have been looking at the impact regular exercise has on our physical and mental health. Each day this week we are going to complete a different physical activity and see how it changes our mood. Keep looking to see which activities we get up to.

Monday - Guided Dance

Before Half Term, Year 2 were tasked with making their own playdough to test which would require more force to flatten than the other. The children worked speedily to create two different mixtures, all measured accurately (in most cases) by the children and mixed expertly. The children then enjoyed experimenting with their new playdough.

Take a look at what the children have been creating in D&T. The children were given the brief of teddy bears: they had to think of the purpose and user themselves. The children learnt running stitch and blanket stitch; they were tasked with adding detail but ensuring that it was possible to individually stitch each detail on. I think you'll agree that they've done a fantastic job andproduced some fantastic bears!
