Rucstall Primary School

A caring, fun loving, learning community

Rowan

Welcome message - September 2022

Welcome to Year 5 - Rowan Class! We hope that the children have had a restful summer and are ready to learn.

Year 5 is a big step up and provides children with new and exciting learning opportunities. I am confident they will rise to the challenge and continue building on previous learning as we progress throughout the year.

We understand the importance of working alongside everyone at home in order to support children throughout their journey at Rucstall Primary School. We would like to welcome you to our Parent’s Information Meeting in the hall after school on Thursday 15th September, where we will share all you need to know about what to expect in Year 5. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

We look forward to the busy and exciting first half-term.

Design and Technology - we started our unit with an adventure to Pizza Express. We had a wonderful experience learning about the ingredients needed to make a pizza. We had a demonstration on the method before having a go at making our own.

We participated in a Scootability workshop to help us learn how to be safe on and around scooters and skateboards. We demonstrated our values of perseverance and cooperation, which allowed us to become more confident throughout this experience

We have been learning about fossils in science. We know four different types of fossils - we even had a go at making our own mold and cast fossils.

We have been working very hard in writing lessons and recently completed our non-chronological reports about the Astronaut training programme that is run by the European Space Agency

Following our visit to pizza express earlier in the term, we have been learning about pizzas around the world. Last week, we created our own designs using toppings which compliment each other. We then had the exciting job of making our own pizza to match our designs. They were delicious!

We have been learning how to play the ukulele. We know the Am, F and C chords, and used them confidently to play a song.

Rowan Class,

What a busy half term of learning we have had! From making pizzas in our design and technology unit to making fossils in science, we have covered a lot of key knowledge in the curriculum. We have demonstrated an enjoyment for reading with lots of us achieving our 25 reads certificate and have also made progress with our times tables recall.

I hope you all have a restful break and come back ready to continue our learning journey in Year 5.

We jumped back into learning after our October break and got to complete a task linked to our safety passports. We now know how to safely carve a pumpkin!

We had the opportunity to learn how to be safe around fire. We know how to hold, and dispose of, sparklers safely.

We have been learning about four ancient civilisations. We shared our research with the class and then decided which we thought was the most significant to us today.

We have been reading The Boy at the Back of the Class. We found out that Ahmet, the main character, is a refugee. We wanted to do some research to find out more about refugees and what life is like for them in the UK. Our research inspired us to write a persuasive letter to the Home Office to see if we could encourage them to change some of the laws we think could be improved.

Our Design & Technology unit has required lots of perseverance this half-term. We developed our sewing skills, including blanket and running stitches, and then applied these to create our own cushions inspired by Mr Men characters. Which characters do you think we made?

Update - December 2022

What a productive term and a brilliant start to the academic year we have had, year 5. From writing a non-chronological report on astronaut training to writing a letter of complaint to the Home Office, we have used an increasing range of grammar features and writing techniques. I have been so impressed by your perseverance and creativity. I am also so pleased to see lots of us taking care over our presentation and achieving our pen licenses.

We have been learning lots of skills throughout the wider curriculum and can now make pizza and sew our own cushions - some of us can even do it better than Miss Scott! We have also been learning how to give directions around the school in French and it is lovely to see children using this knowledge in games on the playground. We certainly are a talented, hard-working class.  I am looking forward to continuing our learning journey after Christmas.

Have a lovely, festive break and come back ready to focus on Spring term.

Merry Christmas 🎄

Update - January 2023

Happy New Year!

We hope the children had a fantastic festive break and are looking forward to continuing their learning journey in Year 5.

This term, we welcome Miss Weston to Rowan Class. She will be here with us until the end of March and will be supporting the children with their learning.

Our enquiry question in history is “How could my life have been different 170 years ago?” So far, we have been learning about the Victorian workhouses and what it was like for people there. We had a go at recreating some of the jobs they had to do. We found it very challenging but it helped us secure our learning.

We have been writing our own Survival Guide for the Amazon Rainforest after being inspired by Katherine Rundell's book, 'The Explorer'.
