Rucstall Primary School

A caring, fun loving, learning community

Rowan Class

Friday 20th December Home Learning.

Below are a serious of activities you may choose to complete:

Maths - Complete the activities calculating perimeter (linked to our learning this week)

Reading - Spend time reading your own book - I would choose a nice Christmas story if you can -  or read the new christmas book that you have all been given!

Writing - Write your own version of A Christmas Carol. You might choose to write is as a narrative, a comic strip with speech bubbles and captions or a series of diary entries from the main character  after each ghosts visit!

BONUS:  If you have access to Disney+ you could watch alternative versions of A Christmas Carol. There is an animated version and A Muppet Christmas Carol that you could enjoy! Netflix also have an animated version called Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.

As we are unable to watch the patomime together, please use BBC iPlayer who have a whole range of pantomimes available with Jack and the Beanstalk one of the options.

Spelling Shed and TTRS also have activites ready for children to complete as per our usual Home Learning offer.

Have a fantastic Christmas and we'll see you in 2025!

Welcome back!

Welcome to Year 5 - Rowan Class! We hope that the children have had a restful and enjoyable summer and are ready to learn. Year 5 is a big step up and provides children with new and exciting learning opportunities. I am confident they will rise to the challenge and continue building on previous learning as we progress throughout the year.

We understand the importance of working alongside everyone at home in order to support children throughout their journey at Rucstall Primary School.

We look forward to the busy and exciting first half-term!

Mr White and Mrs Hemmings

What a week!

The children have enjoyed their first full week in Rowan class and have settled really well with routines and expectations of being in Year 5.

We have spent time learning how to use a growth mindset in maths (and in everything we do) and have taken a leap into space through our fun-packed class book 'Cosmic' and learning about astronaut training and the European Space Agency in Writing.

As well as this, we have already started looking at ancient civilisations in History and recapped numbers to 50 in French amongst so much more.

Of course, the highlight of this week was learning to skateboard safely. The class were so enthusiastic and quickly learned how to get on and stay balanced (quite important!), travel and even attempt a trick or two!

Skateboard Safety!

Happy 50th Birthday, Rucstall!

We have been fully engaged in so much learning over these past two weeks from fun space adventures in our reading of 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell Boyce to learning more about astronauts through writing interview questions to candidates and then putting them through the interview process in Writing alongside learning a traditional war dance - the Haka - in PE (see below) and so much more.

We have also been celebrating 50 years of Rucstall Primary this week with assemblies showing the development of the school and how the area has changes. To celebrate further, we held our first Art Day of the year with the theme of swans which the children were fully engaged in and being creative. Year 5/6 had to put their observational and watercolour painting skills to the test with some fantastic results which are on display for our celebrations today (Friday 27th September).

Astronaut Interview! Do you have what it takes?

Haka - War Dance!

Here is half of the class demonstrating their dance in front of the others to put fear in them like the famous All Blacks of New Zealand (and others) do before Rugby matches to intimidate their opponents. They used strong movements and facial expressions (and tongues out!) to perform!

Pizza Express Experience!

We had a fantastic learning experience at Pizza Express this week as the class were given a masterclass by the team at the Festival Place branch. Not only did we listen and follow istructions carefully but we got to use our learning from DT to use flour to help knead our dough and then add passatta, cheese and smell / add herbs to make our very own pizzas to take home! We had a few technical issues with some holey dough, at times, but the children all persevered and took advice on how to restore their base. Next week, we'll be putting these skills to the test by making our own pizzas in class.

Extra, Extra, Read all about it!

To end the week, we have strated to look at the features of newspaper reports, in Writing, and have begun to think about how the orientation (introduction) is written. We had great fun rolling dice to select different parts of the 5ws to make funny sentences and then rearrange the order to show that we can manipulate the orientation and it is not written in a set order!

Positive Noticing Day

Since returning from our half term break, Rowan class have continued to engage and enjoy all of their learning from newspaper reports, on an alien crash landing, in Writing to starting Football and Gynmastics in PE. One area they have been most inquisitive has been in their learning of 'living things' in Science by classifying animals and plants, and looking more closely at what bacteria are and the positive and negative impacts they can have!

As the pictures above show, we very much enjoyed Positive Noticing Day this week as all of the wrote messages of positivity to one another: making themselves feel good as well as others! It was lovely to see them all taking notice of each other and sharing a wondefully kind moment.

Rowan class have become archeologists and journalists this week as we delve deeper into the history of Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. In Writing, we have sequenced the events of the find and spent time considering the different view points of Carter's team and the local Egyptians on what should be done with the artefacts within.

The class held a fantastic debate with some excellent persuasive arguments! The pictures show their enthusiasm. In maths, we have been learing more about fractions: finding equalivalent fractions, ordering and comparing fractions and converting improper fractions to mixed number. We have used number lines and visuals to help our learning and prove our understanding.

Finally, in art the children have been developing their colour mixing skills and using different brush strokes with great success!

Persuasive Points of View

In our first writing unit of 2025, we have been developing our powers of persuasion by learning about emotive language as well as thinking about the pros and cons of school uniform! Children had to write arguments for both view points and were then told which they had to share to try to persuade others to join their point of view. We had some very passionate responses! Next, we need to build on this to write a letter to Mrs Griffiths!

Programming Probots

In Computing, we have been using our coding skills to programme a probot to draw shapes. This required maths skills of shape and angles! If we made errors, in our team, we had to try to debug the code to get things right. We have loved this learning with some octogans and even dodecagons (12-sided shape) being drawn!

Olivia was inspired by our class learning and made her own model at home to demonstrate how a 2D net folds into a 3D shape!
