Wellbeing Wednesday, shelter building, shadows....and a snow flurry!
These past two weeks have given children in Rowan class the opportunity to share positive noticing about each other; finding the words to anonymously spread kindness. Every year, the children love these days and this year was no different with everyone smiling as they gave and recieved warm messages. Talking of warm, the weather has turned and we are definitley edging towards winter as we had a flurry of snow which was very exciting! We took a few minutes out after registration to go and enjoy the snow storm before settling back down to some maths! :)
We have also had another great Outdoor Learning session with Mrs Sayer where we put our den building skills to the test to use some minumal equipment to make shelters. The group worked in small teams to make and then share thier creations with some interesting results! I'm not sure I would feel safe in some!
Science also gave us an opportunity to be outdoors as we investigated Earth's rotation and how/why shadows change over the course of a day - we went out several times and drew our shadows before measuring them and plotting the data in a line graph. We had some fantastic discussions about the results!
Back in the classroom, we have delved deeper into ancient Egypt and started to learn a little more about Howard Carter and Tutankhamun through our class book - Secrets of the Sun King - and in our history learning with plenty more to come this term.
November, already!
Since returning from our half term break, Rowan class have engaged in some fantastic news reporting, modeling themselves on the presenters of Newsround to share breaking news about an alien arriving in the UK - the children worked well in groups to write and edit scripts before impressing with some fantastic acting skills. Some stills are below.
We have also started to understand how to find equivalent fractions and prove our understanding in maths and taken on some Floor in gymnastics as well as learning more about the location of ancient Egypt.
Time flies....to space!
Where has the term gone? We have been engaged in so much learning that we can't quite believe here are only two weeks until half term.
The class have been developing their writing skills further with grammar focus on sentence types and including relative clauses in their writing to give more information about a noun. This, alongside all of our research about astronauts, has led to teh children drafting and editing engaging reports all about Astronaut Training! They are oracles of knowledge now.
Our maths learning has seen us recap addition and subtraction with ever growing digts. We have used the inverse to check our answers and enjoyed solving missing number problems for both addition and subtraction!
In the wider curriculum, we are still enjoying learning about the history of pizza and how dough is made in Design & Technology as well as learning aboy ancient Civilisations in History. During PE, our movement and working in unison has developed when creating a Haka of our own and our basketball skills are being testing in mini matches.
Two weeks of jam-packed learning to come - including a trip to Pizza Express next week! :)
What a start!
The children have enjoyed their first two week's in Rowan class and have settled really well with routines and expectations of being in Year 5.
We have spent time learning how to use a growth mindset in maths (and in everything we do) and have taken a leap into space through our fun-packed class book 'Cosmic' as well as learning all about the persoanl characteristics and skills required to be an astronaut in Writing. This has led the children to an exciting role-play as interviewers and interviewees hiring the next astronauts fof teh European Space Agency! See the pictures below!
As well as this, we have already started looking at ancient civilisations in History, Fossils in Science and have been working on dribbling and shooting skills in basketball lessons amongst so much more!
Welcome back!
Welcome to Year 5 - Rowan Class! We hope that the children have had a restful and enjoyable summer and are ready to learn. Year 5 is a big step up and provides children with new and exciting learning opportunities. I am confident they will rise to the challenge and continue building on previous learning as we progress throughout the year.
We understand the importance of working alongside everyone at home in order to support children throughout their journey at Rucstall Primary School.
We look forward to the busy and exciting first half-term!
